The Sault Ste. Marie Area Is A Beautiful Place To Visit

By Frances Allen

No trip to Michigan would be complete without a visit to the northernmost region where the St. Mary's River divides the United States from Canada. The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge spans the two countries, and connects two cities with the same name, one in America and one in Canada. This is an area of unbelievable natural beauty on both the Lake Superior side and Lake Huron side of Michigan's upper peninsula.

No trip here would be complete without a visit to the Soo Locks. They are one of the largest and busiest engineering achievements in the northern hemisphere. From May through October you have an opportunity to book a cruise in order to experience firsthand the massive amount of ships that pass through the locks each day. Lighthouse cruises, dining cruises, and fireworks cruises are available.

Tahquamenon Falls is another site of amazing beauty. If you have the chance, you should visit both the upper and lower levels. They are completely different, but are equally impressive. These waterfalls are larger than any other you will find east of the Mississippi River. There are plenty of hiking trails and paths to explore. If you get hungry, the brewery has delicious menu items to choose from.

It is not unusual that this area has been home to a number of shipwrecks during its long history. There are plenty of opportunities for scuba divers to check out the remains of numerous ships resting at the bottom of both Lake Superior and Lake Huron. You might want to take a glass bottom boat tour instead of donning scuba gear. You can see what is left of one such ship located just below the surface of the lake.

If you have the time, you should consider taking an Agawa Canyon train tour. The scenery is exceptional, especially in the fall when leaves are turning. Scheduled stopovers are planned during the summer and fall months so visitors will be able to spend an hour or so hiking the trails in the wilderness park.

For the gamblers, Kewadin Casino is conveniently located just minutes from Soo Locks. After spending the day enjoying the natural beauty of the region, it might be time for some fine dining and entertainment along with a pass by the gaming tables. DreamMakers Theater offers top class musicians who routinely play here. If you want something a little more intimate, there is a lounge that offers karaoke and comedy nights.

The Northern Lights are a naturally occurring phenomenon visible in this area. They appear as a result of certain activity on the sun, but just when and where they show up is anybody's guess. Spring and fall are the seasons the light show most often appears. A lot of people do online research to see if conditions will be right when they are in the area.

Vacationing in northern Michigan is a special experience. It will make you appreciate just what an amazing world we live in.
